Ocean Literacy

Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you and our influence on the ocean. The ocean moderates our climate and weather, produces 50% of the oxygen we breathe, freshwater, food, new medicines, renewable energy, well-being and much more.

Steve was invited to participate in the Trans-Atlantic Ocean Literacy Workshop in September 2013 and along with the other delegates signed a vision Statement on Ocean Literacy.

The Plymouth workshop on Transatlantic Ocean Literacy was held at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) Citadel Hill Laboratory and Plymouth University’s Marine Institute at its Marine Building. The workshop followed the two day European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) 2013 conference held in Plymouth and hosted by the MBA.

Steve’s ocean project The Adventures of Ed the Bear reflects many of the ocean literacy principles. For more information about ocean literacy click ocean literacy or for more information about how Steve uses ocean literacy in his teaching click Ocean Literacy and ROV Project 2015
